Why choose us?

Naptown Freedom Schools offers the CDF Freedom Schools model, a one-of-a-kind, effective program. We are the only nonprofit bringing the CDF curriculum to Annapolis, and it is entirely free of charge to families. We will enroll scholars in elementary and middle school to experience Freedom Schools. Learn more about our unique program below!

Our program will operate at Eastport United Methodist Church.

Integrated Reading Curriculum

The IRCʼs main goal is to foster a love of reading in scholars Grades K-12 with weekly themes and engaging books. The IRC Booklist consists of 100+ titles selected by a committee of educators, community organizers, award-winning literary creators, and CDF staff members. They represent a spectrum of cultural experience and encourage scholars to dream – and scholars take home a book at the end of each week.

Harambee!

Harambee means “let’s pull together” in Swahili, and at CDF Freedom Schools sites Harambee is the opening activity during which students sing, dance, cheer, and get excited for a day of learning. It’s a moment to reset and Get Hype!

Parental Development

All sites have weekly parent meetings focused on educational and social development of children, parenting, CDF initiatives, and other activities to build parent empowerment and success. Parents are important partners in their child’s education and are encouraged to participate in many ways.

Freedom Summer Finale

The Finale serves as the culminating event for the summer in which scholars prepare a presentation/performance for parents and community members. It’s a great time for our village to support scholars and share in all their hard work during their 6 weeks at Freedom Schools.

National Day of Social Action

NDSA is a collective effort to pass the mic to our youth. Sites around the country organize protests and events, led by scholars, annually on the third Wednesday in July. Past topics include: Voting, Environmental Justice, Gun Violence, Banned Books, and Mental Health.

Afternoon Activities and Field Trips

Every day, scholars will participate in afternoon activities, which can vary according to a site’s interests. Some examples are sports, dance, STEM activities, and gardening. Additionally, scholars are taken on a field trip each week for further enrichment!

D.E.A.R. Time

Drop Everything And Read! This is the time we give scholars to pick any book they’d like and enjoy reading.

Preparing for Enrollment

We will serve elementary and middle school students in the Annapolis area. Enrollment for our 30 scholar spots for Summer 2027 will open in late 2026.
